A lot of people are more concered about the user end. Two examples:

1. YouTube needs to loose a point for watermarking the video. Period.

2. I could be wrong about this, but Google's videos seem to be cached while YouTubes are not. If so this is a big deal if you ever want to show/see a video again, or even just reload the page. The browser was no longer showing any movement on the file. It was showing Done in the corner of the browser window indicating that the file was no longer moving.

However, even if it had been functioning, I don't think it's a good method for doing video sharing if that's they way it works.

Are the files available when you click on them or does that first play attempt cause the loading issue? I would hope they load the video the same way as Google and YouTube and not give you access to it until it's actually ready to be viewed.

Either way, Vimeo is a really niche little site with that 30mb limit and I don't see it being something most video editing types gravitate toward. Just because you didn't see the "94 videos ahead of you" message until you tried to view the video doesn't mean it wasn't already in the render queue. In my experience, Vimeo puts videos into the render queue right away, although it sometimes takes a long time for the render to complete.

As for the 30-MB limit, I agree, it seems excessively small.

--Jim

Jim,I took a quick look at Vimeo. I'll go take a look at Vimeo and maybe do a follow-up piece next week to add a couple of the smaller upstarts to the mix to see how they fare.

It is especially interesting to me because it is really a fundamental shift for communities like ours where we can for the first time really interact with each other in meaninful ways. Personally, I would be willing to pay a monthly subscription fee if I could have two things.

Number one, I want the ability to control the video format and number two, I want to be able to embed that format in multiple resolutions on my page. I'd pay for a service that allows me to do that and doesn't cost an arm and a leg but paying is a whole other issue that is going to start impacting all these sites who have to be hemhorraging cash for all the costs they are incurring to do this.

But for now, I'm enjoying the ride.

Cheers!

Greg

Greg -This is a great post, and I plan to post abo...

Greg -

This is a great post, and I plan to post about in on Making Movies tomorrow.
